1 WORLD MAGAZINE: WHO IS JAI MALANI?
JAI MALANI: Jai Malani is a recording artist, she is also is a transgender who has been trans gendering since 11th grade in high school. She moved to Atlanta, Georgia after graduating high school in 2010. After graduating college with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, I dibbled and dabbled in the entertainment industry because I’ve always been an entertainer. In school I was always the class clown that would make everyone smile; I was friends with everyone including my enemies. As a transgender, I was always well-dressed, glamorous and here I am today as Jai Malani!
1 WORLD MAGAZINE: WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A TRANSGENDER IN THE FIRST PLACE?
JAI MALANI: Well it wasn’t really a decision of mine, I always knew. As I was transitioning, I was always this way. I always had a soft voice. I remembered when a group of guys would tell me to put some base in my voice or whatever. So, it wasn’t a decision, it was always me!
1 WORLD MAGAZINE: WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU ALREADY FACED AS BEING A TRANS GENDER?
JAI MALANI: Of course, there was several challenges that we face as transgenders. I go with the motto “Life is what you make it.” Anytime you go out there is a challenge being a transgender woman. You get good compliments and when they look into your face, they know and they’ll show you so much appreciation. And there are some people who are rude for no reason. There’s a lot of pro’s and con’s and it’s all about how you balance your life, how you take it, how you respond to it and how comfortable you are with yourself.
1 WORLD MAGAZINE: HOW DID YOU GET STARTED WITH YOUR MUSIC CAREER? WAS IT SOMETHING YOU WAS ALWAYS PASSIONATE ABOUT?
JAI MALANI: I was always an entertainer and loved everything. So, when I moved to Atlanta and this was when Nicki Minaj first came out and she did a show for gay pride that was in Decatur, GA. I’ve been following her for years and listening to her music and when I finally seen her in concert, it really hit me. 2010 when I was working this job, I took the bus because I had a really long ride; I would put my headphones in and write lyrics. So, I told myself that I was going to record this. I met this girl that had a studio and I recorded my songs there. The songs came out really dope! I kept listening to those songs every morning until I got better at it.
1 WORLD MAGAZINE: YOUR RECENT SINGLE ‘DRIBBLE’, HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE TITLE?
JAI MALANI: Well with Dribble it was like I heard the beat and it sounded like a basketball. It just gave me a basketball vibe.
1 WORLD MAGAZINE: WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION WITH ‘MONEY RIGHT’?
JAI MALANI: That was my most recent one. It was basically an introduction to where I’m at now. I found that beat from Kato the producer. When I went in the studio to record, the vibe was great! The people there welcomed me with open arms and was willing to help me. I was like I have a little bit of money and I can afford studio time.
1 WORLD MAGAZINE: ARE THERE ANY NEW PROJECTS IN THE WORKS FOR THE NEW YEAR?
JAI MALANI: I do have a few projects. I will be doing another official mixtape this year within the next couple of months. That mixtape is going to be deep. Everyone will know who Jai Malani is. It’s going to be all new beats; it’s gonna be loud, crazy, persona! Now that I’ve narrowed down my circle and the people that want to be around me; we will have business cards, t-shirts, etc. I’m really looking for a booking agent so I can book shows for the summer. With the holidays this year such as Labor Day and spring break, I want to make sure everything is ready. My team and I will be working really really hard to push this project out. I know it will definitely be out way before the summer.
