Interview By Kaz Turbill

What is the Boston hip hop scene like?

Well right now it’s like any hip hop scene. Growing!

How old were you when you started rapping?

We started rapping around 11 & 13.

What was the first track you ever recorded and released and when?

Who stole the cookie from the cookie Jar” was the first song we ever recorded! First song ever released was called “Black Ice”.

Who were you influenced by growing up and in your early years as an emcee?

Kid n Play, Naughty By Nature, Nas, Master Ace, Big Daddy Kane, LL Cool J, Kool Moe Dee, Poor Righteous Teachers, Public Enemy, Salt-N- Pepa, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, NWA, Kool G Rap, Mobb Deep & so much more…

How significant do you see them being on your own style and content?

Very, we have bars mixed in with knowledge and power! Look at the artist named before this and see they had the same feel musically as well

How did NBS come to be?

Well we started off dancing in talent show. Then started rapping with Maurice Starr (New Edition, New Kids on the Block, Perfect Gentlemen) in Roxbury, Mass. From there we kept going.

How did you break into the scene?

Nationally we signed to University Records out of Washington, D.C. by way of Island Def Jam. Then we went independent and broke internationally with the Snowgoons. Since then we’ve been a force to reckon with.

Which artists have you collaborated with over the years?

9th Wonder, ONYX, Rapper NOYD, Sisqo of Dru Hill, Erik Sermon, Big Daddy Kane, BIG TWINZ, Planet Asia, Statik Selektah, Snowgoons, Snak The Ripper, Slaine, Merkules, Edo G, BIG SHUG and more.

Where do you draw your inspiration from and can you describe your creative process?

Inspiration came from those around us who were routing for us and those who were hating on us. All was used to propel our careers and to continue pushing. There’s no real process we followed just motivation.

Your 2015 release, “Trapped in America” was a great album and was produced by the legendary producers, the Snowgoons…

How and when did you guys first link up?

We linked with the Snowgoons over MySpace. They had a relationship with our business partner Virtuoso who also is the first American act or act in general to ever record on a Snowgoons beat. Where we are the first to ever rap on a Sicknature beat. The same year we signed to Big Bang Records with Virtuoso, Sicknature signed with the Snowgoons and the rest is history! Goon Musick for life…

What lead you to release such a political, thought provoking album?

The state of the U.S. We knew Trump was coming in office and shit was about to get even realer. Plus in that time things were hectic in the states with police brutality and shootings occurring with young black men in the streets. How could you not talk about how real shit is while everyone thought shit was sweet, we were hurting out here. The climate was weird. People were uncertain, safety was at risk.

What are some of your career highlights?

Touching 6-7 continents. Australia completed number 6 for us. That was awesome. Knowing where we come from and where we been all through music. Shit is still mind blowing.

Where has your music taken you performance wise?

Kind of answered that in question before but to name some spots: Senegal, Ghana, Colombia, Japan, Poland, China, Germany, Barcelona, Greece, Italy, Malaysia, Austria, Switzerland, Vienna, Russia, Belgium, Estonia, Czech Republic, Amsterdam… we can keep going but that’s just an idea. On Blue Book number 2. We been moving.

Favourite places to perform & why?

Hmm that’s hard we get a lot of love worldwide. So we can’t pick one spot. They all been litty. But to be honest the best place is usually with the best weed and girls haha.

What places will you be hitting next and will you be performing with anyone else?

Not sure. Being independent we never know. Shows come out the blue. We haven’t been an act that had shit set up for the year it’s been more spare of the moment. Sometimes shows just fall in our laps and then we out.

You have your own clothing line, The Vets Wear…

Do you design everything yourself and is this a passion of yours?

We started the line in Switzerland with our brother DJ Tray. As for designs he’s been out main designer but we’ve been venturing out to others as well. We are proud of our work and excited to share our winter collection with you all. Before to check us out at @Vets_Wear on IG to keep up on what’s next with the clothing line.

What are The Swiss Vets?

We mentioned DJ Tray who is 1/5 of the SwissVets including both of us but it’s basically the Swiss Division of The Vets. Official Vet reppers that consist of MD aka Swiss Meech CEO of Empire Music and Jake Beatz of PW Records in Basel Switzerland. We released two projects so far under the SwissVets umbrella SwissVets and SwissVets 2 available on all media platforms with hard copies available as well.

How did Big Bang Records / Empire Music come to be and who does it involve?

Well Big Bang is our record label which is ran by Brian Shirley, Miguel Blackmerhart & Imam Firmin. Where as Empire is ran by MD in Switzerland. We both contributed key pieces to our collaborative projects and thought it was only right we release our projects on both labels.

What are your views on the current climate of the industry and artists who have recently made big breaks into the scene?

We love it. It’s new it’s fresh. Feel there is a lot of fake shit going on but this rap shit has always been entertainment. The business has always been funny. Gotta take it for what it is. What happen to Takashi is sad but hope it serves as a lesson to all young rappers out there. In the word of the legendary J-Prince “You keep doing all that campaigning and you may get elected”.

Who do you rate of the new wave of artists that have hit the scene over the last few years?

Again we fucks with all the artists out. We bang to they shit in the club and when we are riding. May not understand it all but we equate that to foreign music. We may not understand it but if the cadence and flow is there we rocking with it. Period.

Are you working on new music currently and is there a new album on the cards?

We have “Lost In Budapest” on its way which is a sequel to our album “BudaVets”. We are really excited about this project and can’t wait to share it with the world. Keep an eye out for that. Just shot 1-5 videos in Budapest, Hungary a few months ago.

What’s on the cards for NBS for 2019?

More music, more touring, more clothes. Keep rocking with the movement #ItsTheVets Peace One Love…
